Rakshabandhan 2023: When is the rakhi 30th or 31st August? know timing, Date, History and more.

This year, several fasts and festivals, including Raksha Bandhan, are being postponed due to the occurrence of an extra month in the Hindu calendar. This phenomenon, known as Adhikamas or Malmas, happens every 3 years, leading to the insertion of an additional month. The period of Adhikamas concluded on August 16th, marking the resumption of fasting and festivities.

Following the conclusion of Adhikamas, the sequence of celebrations will commence with Nag Panchami, followed by Raksha Bandhan. Raksha Bandhan holds a significant place in Hindu culture, symbolizing the affection between siblings. This nationwide celebration involves sisters tying rakhi onto their brothers' wrists, accompanied by prayers for their well-being, happiness, and prosperity. In return, brothers vow to safeguard their sisters from life's challenges.

Raksha Bandhan is characterized by sisters performing aarti, applying a Tilak on their brothers' foreheads, and offering them sweets. Brothers, in turn, express their affection by presenting gifts to their sisters.

Raksha Bandhan, a cherished Hindu festival, is observed annually on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan. This year, Shravan Purnima falls on two consecutive days, namely August 30th and 31st. However, it's important to note that the shadow of Bhadra will be cast upon Shravan Purnima. In accordance with religious beliefs, Raksha Bandhan is not observed during the presence of Bhadra's shadow. It is considered inauspicious to tie rakhi during this time, and sisters are advised against doing so.

Bhadra Kaal is universally regarded as an inauspicious period, during which auspicious activities are avoided. The presence of Bhadra's shadow raises caution about the timing of the festival and the tying of rakhi. To ensure an auspicious and propitious celebration, it is crucial to understand the duration of Bhadra's shadow on Raksha Bandhan and determine the most favorable time to partake in the festivities and perform the rakhi ceremony.

In the year 2023, according to the Vedic calendar, the auspicious full moon date of the Shravan month will commence at 10:58 am on August 30th and conclude at 07:07 am on August 31st. Given that the full moon date spans over two days, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated for a duration of 2 days this year. However, it's important to consider that the shadow of Bhadra will also be present during the Raksha Bandhan festivities. The date of Raksha Bandhan in 2023 is subject to varying opinions due to the presence of Bhadra's shadow. As a result, the determination of the exact date for Raksha Bandhan this year is influenced by this differing perspective.

Bhadra & Auspicious Muhurt

The shadow of Bhadra will cast its influence on Raksha Bandhan this year. According to the Hindu Panchang, on August 30th, Bhadra's influence will commence at 10:58 am and persist until 09:01 pm on the same day. This year, Bhadra's presence will coincide with the day of Raksha Bandhan, rendering it inauspicious to tie rakhi during this period. On the contrary, Shravan Purnima will conclude at 07:07 am on August 31st.

As a result, it is advisable to tie rakhi on August 30th after the onset of Bhadra, i.e., after 9:01 pm. Additionally, another auspicious time for the rakhi ceremony would be on August 31st, prior to 07:07 am in the morning, before the conclusion of Shravan Purnima. These timings ensure that the rakhi ceremony is conducted during propitious periods, avoiding the influence of Bhadra's shadow.

History

In accordance with religious narratives and ancient texts, Bhadra is depicted as the sister of Shani Dev (Saturn) and the offspring of Lord Surya (the Sun) and Mother Chhaya. According to mythology, Bhadra was born with the purpose of vanquishing demons. Remarkably, upon her birth, Bhadra exhibited an immediate inclination to consume the entire universe. Consequently, any environment where auspicious endeavors, rituals, and ceremonies are undertaken during Bhadra's influence tends to encounter challenges. Consequently, during Bhadra, the undertaking of auspicious activities is avoided. Bhadra is assigned the 7th Karan, known as Vishti Karan, among the 11 Karans.

As per the calculations within the Vedic calendar, Bhadra's presence spans across three realms: the heavens, the underworld, and the earth. When the Moon occupies the zodiac signs of Cancer, Leo, Aquarius, and Pisces, Bhadra's influence takes hold on Earth. During Bhadra's terrestrial presence, her countenance is directed forward. During this period, engaging in any form of auspicious or propitious activities is discouraged. It's believed that attempts to carry out auspicious deeds during Bhadra are often unsuccessful.
